Small bound book, handwritten, containing 54 entries, chiefly of sheep marks, with drawings of ears with marks (some with sheep's hair), including the names of many prominent early settlers; record (1844-1850) of overdue taxes and land being sold for recovery of taxes, with copies of pertinent notices given each delinquent taxpayer; and record (1832-1850) of 40 liquor licenses, listing name of licensee, name of selectman granting each license, dates, and beginning in 1844, restrictions on the sale of liquor for medicinal, mechanical, and communion purposes only, with the name of buyer and amount sold, to be made available on public record.

Cutler was born in Royalston, Massachusetts, the son of a farmer. Despite objections from his father, he desired a better education than the rudimentary courses he received in the local school, so he studied surveying and then began a career as a schoolmaster.
